Five thousands Portuguese footmen and three thousand horsemen are led by a reluctant D.Afonso V and his son, the battle-eager João, later to become D. It is a cold, foggy and dampy day in la Raya– a region alongside the frontier between Portugal and Castille- and near the town of Toro, opposing armies of similar size and constitution gather to fight one of the most indecisive scuffles in Iberian military history.
